Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about counseling, family therapy, and corporate training
What age groups do you work with?
We primarily serve young people aged 6-18 and their families. For children under 6, parent-focused consultation is recommended. Adolescent individual sessions are conducted with parental consent.
What issues can family and parent-child counseling help with?
Common youth concerns include: academic pressure and school avoidance, anxiety and mood swings, rebellious behavior and parent-child conflict, social difficulties, concentration issues, and screen overdependency. Adult counseling focuses on parent-child communication, marital relationships, and work burnout. Family legacy work addresses intergenerational communication patterns, cultural transmission, and values integration.
Is counseling or parent-child counseling actually effective?
Yes. A large body of clinical research confirms that professional counseling and family counseling produce significant improvements. We use evidence-based approaches (such as CBT and Family Systems Counseling), customized to each client's situation.
What are the credentials of your counselors?
Our team includes counselors registered with the China Mental Health Association, senior health managers, registered social workers, international family relationship specialists, and corporate consultants — all under ongoing supervision and professional development. Our core team has extensive clinical experience in youth mental health and family systems counseling. Ask our staff for specific counselor backgrounds before booking.
How do I book a consultation or training?
You can book via the contact form on this page, or scan the WeChat QR code at the bottom-left of the website. Please describe your needs when reaching out and we will respond within 24 hours. You can also contact us by email — response time is the same.
What happens in the first session?
You can start with a free initial assessment via WeChat or online (~30 minutes), where we learn about your main concerns, goals, and family situation. Based on this, we match you with the most suitable counselor and create a preliminary plan. Regular sessions are typically 60-120 minutes each.
What should I prepare before the first session?
No special preparation is needed. We recommend thinking about the main issue you want to address, and arriving on time. For children's counseling, a parent should attend the first session together with the child. To save time, we recommend downloading and reading the Informed Consent Form in advance — if you have any questions, feel free to raise them during the first session.
How many sessions are typically needed for a treatment course?
This depends on the type of issue and your goals: general emotional concerns typically require 6-12 sessions; deeper parent-child relationship repair typically 12-20 sessions; complex family systems issues may require longer-term support. We will work with you to set expectations during the assessment phase.
Can I try a family or parent-child counseling session before committing?
Yes. The free initial assessment via WeChat or online lets you experience the counselor's style and our approach before deciding whether to continue with regular sessions.
Can I cancel or reschedule after booking?
Yes. Please notify us at least 24 hours in advance so we can reschedule. Late cancellations or no-shows may affect your priority for future bookings.
In-person or online — which is available?
Both are available. Clients in Guangzhou can choose in-person sessions. Remote clients receive professional video counseling, though outcomes may be slightly less effective than in-person.
Is online remote consultation effective?
Online counseling is well-supported by research, though outcomes may be slightly less effective than in-person. All our counselors are trained in professional online consultation practices and use stable video platforms — making it a convenient option for clients unable to attend in person.
What equipment do I need for online sessions?
A stable internet connection, a quiet private space, and a smartphone or computer with a camera and microphone. We will send platform instructions after your booking is confirmed.
Can I request a counselor of a specific gender?
Yes. Please indicate your preference when booking and we will do our best to match you with a suitable counselor, though we cannot guarantee this.
Do children need a parent present during counseling?
Children under 12 require parental participation throughout the process. Adolescents aged 12-18 can have independent sessions with parental consent, but we recommend a parent remain nearby (within visible distance) during sessions. We also provide regular progress updates to parents.
Can parents observe their child's sessions?
For children under 12, parents are active participants in the sessions — joining discussions and practicing skills together. For adolescents in independent sessions, content is kept private to protect the therapeutic space, but we provide regular progress updates to parents.
My child doesn't want to attend family or parent-child counseling. Should I force them?
Coercion rarely works and can backfire. We recommend first understanding the root of their resistance, and potentially starting with parent-only counseling to improve the family dynamic — children often become more willing to engage once the home environment shifts.
Will counseling information be shared with parents?
For children under 12: parents are primary participants, so information sharing is part of the counseling process. For adolescents aged 12-18: session content is kept confidential, with exceptions for safety-related situations (see our Privacy Policy for full details). Our counselors always explain confidentiality rules to both the adolescent and their parents during the initial session, clarifying the boundaries for all three parties.
How is confidentiality protected?
All consultations are strictly confidential. We sign confidentiality agreements with every client. See our full Privacy & Confidentiality Policy.
Will my child's school or teachers find out about counseling?
No. All session content is protected under confidentiality agreement. Without your authorization, we do not share any information with third parties — including schools.
How are corporate training programs priced?
Corporate training is customized based on training objectives, program duration, and number of participants. A detailed quote is provided after an initial needs assessment — the first consultation is free.
What scenarios are suitable for corporate training?
Our corporate training covers: team cohesion and communication, cross-departmental collaboration, stress management and employee wellbeing, leadership development for managers, and HR crisis intervention training. All programs can be customized to your industry.
Can companies trial a training session first?
Yes. We offer a free needs consultation to understand your team's situation and recommend the most suitable training modules before formal engagement.
What is the Dopamine Reset program?
The Dopamine Reset is Gracewood Culture's targeted intervention for youth screen overdependency and motivation loss. Grounded in neuroscience and CBT principles, it helps adolescents rebuild healthy dopamine regulation, restore daily routines, and reconnect with intrinsic motivation — without punitive approaches.
What is Family Systems Counseling?
Family Systems Counseling views youth behavioral issues as reflections of family interaction patterns rather than individual problems alone. Our counselors observe and adjust how family members communicate, addressing the root dynamics — not just surface behaviors — to create lasting relational change.
Which cities do you serve?
In-person counseling is primarily available to clients in Guangzhou and the Greater Bay Area. Corporate training and online counseling are available across China and globally to Chinese-speaking and English-speaking communities.
How is Gracewood Culture different from other counseling platforms?
We specialize exclusively in youth and family work, and also offer periodic training sessions and workshops. Every counselor has a defined area of expertise. We provide not just individual sessions but integrated support from assessment through plan to ongoing review, with regular progress check-ins.
